The Tech Industry is Opening Doors… Depending on Who You Are

Written by: Catherine

I’d like to start my first contributing post with a quote from The Farthest Shore by the amazing Ursula K. Le Guin:

“...when we crave power over life – endless wealth, unassailable safety, immortality – then desire becomes greed. And if knowledge allies itself to that greed, then comes evil. Then the balance of the world is swayed, and ruin weighs heavy in the scale.”

When I came across this passage a few nights ago, I thought immediately of this blog. Fortunate timing, because it effectively captures the attitude I am bringing to the topic of technology, knowledge, and power relationships. My current belief is that while contemporary technology is providing truly amazing tools for underrepresented and underprivileged individuals and communities to access and share information and to organize, it is also providing those with the privilege to invest in, develop, market, or sell technology new ways to exploit and profit from the rest of us.
